When the field has to become a stage, a parking surface, or a graduation venue overnight, the ground underneath needs serious protection — and the people walking on it need a flat, stable, trip-free surface. Commencement Flooring, also known as Matrax HD, is the heavy-duty portable event flooring built for exactly that job. Manufactured from virgin high-density polyethylene (HDPE), each 4' x 4' panel is engineered to spread the weight of vehicles and heavy wheeled equipment while shielding the turf, hardscape, or natural grass below.
It's the same flooring system trusted to cover the country's most recognizable stadiums and event grounds, and it's available in panel quantities that scale from a single tent footprint to a full stadium floor.
What sets the HD panel apart is the way it handles weight. Each panel has a closed, flat back that makes full contact with the surface underneath, so the load is spread evenly instead of concentrating on a few points. The panels also feature over-lapping flanges that pass load from one panel to the next, creating a continuous deck that supports heavy wheeled equipment without rutting the ground beneath it.
That same design protects what's below. Whether you're laying panels over a manicured field, a paved plaza, or a delicate hardscape, the flat-back contact and load-spreading flanges keep heavy traffic from leaving a mark.
Covering a living surface for days at a time used to mean killing the grass underneath. Matrax HD solves that with built-in drainage holes and aeration openings that let water drain through and allow light and air to reach the turf below. That means longer setups without sacrificing the field — a critical feature for stadiums that need to protect a playing surface between events.
The HDPE composition is reinforced with additives for added strength and includes built-in UV inhibitors, so panels hold up to sustained sun exposure. The material is also designed to accommodate naturally occurring thermal expansion, keeping the deck stable as temperatures swing.
Panels join with a continuous overlapping lip and a quarter-turn vertical interlocking mechanism. The cams are nonmetallic, lock with a simple quarter turn, and pull adjacent panels together into a contiguous, trip-free surface. The result is a floor that stays put under foot and wheel traffic but still breaks down quickly for transport when the event ends.
Because installation is tool-light and intuitive, large floors go down fast — an advantage when you're working against a tight event timeline. (A locking tool and edge pieces are available separately.)
One of the biggest advantages of the system is that the heavy-duty HD panel integrates directly with the drivable Matrax LD. That lets you build a single, unified floor that uses HD panels where vehicles and heavy equipment travel and lighter LD panels for pedestrian zones — without changing systems or losing the trip-free transitions between them.
If you're unsure which mix of panels a layout calls for, the load rating is the deciding factor: anything heavier than foot traffic points to the HD panel. The HD weighs 50 lbs per panel versus 30.5 lbs for the LD, reflecting that extra structural capacity.
For public events, accessibility matters. Matrax HD accepts ADA-compliant edge ramps that ease the transition from ground level up onto the deck, making the surface usable for wheelchairs, carts, and pedestrians alike. Combined with the flush, interlocked panel surface, the system creates an accessible walkway that meets the demands of large public gatherings — from graduation processions to concert egress.
This isn't flooring that only works on paper. Matrax panels have covered the fields and grounds of some of the most demanding venues in the country — protecting the surface at the Rose Bowl, MetLife Stadium, and Gillette Stadium for concerts and large-scale events, and supporting efficiency and durability at high-profile gatherings like the 2018 ceremonies at the U.S. Capitol.
From stadium concerts and commencement ceremonies to trade shows, festivals, and industrial staging, the common thread is the same: a portable floor strong enough to drive on, gentle enough to protect what's underneath, and fast enough to install and remove on an event schedule.
Every panel is made in America and is 100% recyclable. The HDPE construction is easy to clean and maintain between events, simple to handle and transport, and durable enough to deliver years of repeat use. For event companies, municipalities, and venues weighing the cost of repeated turf repair against a reusable protection system, the math tends to favor a deck that pays for itself over many deployments.
