DuraDeck Ground Protection Mats: A Buyer's & Sizing Guide

DuraDeck turns soft, muddy, or sensitive ground into a stable surface you can drive, roll, and walk on — then pick up and reuse for years.

Each 4' x 8' HDPE mat weighs about 86 lbs, supports up to 80 tons depending on the subsurface, and installs with no ground prep and no special tools.

DuraDeck is a molded HDPE access mat used for turf protection, temporary roadways, and pedestrian paths over terrain that's otherwise hard to cross. It gives vehicles, equipment, and crews safe access while shielding the ground below from rutting and keeping people out of the mud. Lightweight enough to carry by hand yet strong enough for tracked machinery, it's one of the most versatile ground protection mats on the market.

What DuraDeck Mats Do

Crew installing DuraDeck ground protection mats at a jobsite
One or two people can place each mat — no heavy equipment to install.

Drop DuraDeck over grass, gravel, soil, concrete, asphalt, mud, or sand — no ground preparation required — and you have an instant work surface. The mats create portable roadways and light-duty work platforms that give equipment a firm, stable base while protecting the surface underneath from damage. They're a fit for construction access, landscaping, utility work, events, and any project that needs to move weight across ground that can't take it bare.

Strength Without the Weight

A solid molded sheet handles everything from a wheelbarrow to a tracked machine.

Each mat is molded from a solid sheet of HDPE — stronger than the hollow or laminated matting it competes with — with multi-directional internal support that disperses load across the panel. The result is a compressive strength of 2,843 psi and a weight rating up to 80 tons depending on the subsurface. The material flexes to follow the contours of the terrain without cracking, and holds up in both extreme heat and cold.

At just 86 lbs, a mat can be carried and placed by one or two people without special tools. (Like all ground protection mats, DuraDeck is meant to be fully supported by the ground beneath it and is not intended for bridging open gaps or ditches.)

Traction on Both Sides

A friction-enhancing pattern gives grip even on inclines.

DuraDeck's surface is covered in a friction-enhancing tread that gives both large and small vehicles the traction they need — even on inclines — while a pedestrian-friendly side keeps foot traffic safe. The mats are also non-conductive, which makes them well suited to utility line work, and they're available in a range of tread patterns and colors to match the job.

Lock Mats Into a Continuous Roadway

DuraDeck mats connected with a four-bolt locking plate
DuraLink connectors and bolt plates stop mats from skipping under traffic.

Individual mats lock together with DuraLink metal connectors (single or double) or bolt-down locking plates (2-bolt or 4-bolt). Connecting the mats keeps them from skipping and hopping under heavy vehicle traffic, turning loose panels into a continuous, solid roadway. As a rule of thumb, link or pin the mats where vehicles travel, and use bolt plates where the surface is mainly walked on — either way, no special tools are needed.

Tougher — and Cheaper — Than Plywood

Unlike plywood, DuraDeck won't warp, rot, crack, delaminate, or absorb water, and the inert HDPE won't leach chemicals or carry contaminants between sites — spill fuel on it, clean it off, and move on. It also satisfies local rules that limit arsenic-treated plywood for access use. One mat can deliver around 70 uses over its life where plywood manages a handful, and up to 500 mats fit on a standard trailer (a single mat fits in most pickup beds). Made in America, 100% recyclable, and backed by a 7-year limited manufacturer warranty.

How to Size Your Order

DuraDeck mats laid out as a temporary roadway
Each 4' x 8' mat covers 32 square feet.

There are two ways to lay DuraDeck, and the calculator on this page handles both. A Wheel Path uses two 4'-wide rows side by side for an 8'-wide track — ideal when vehicles follow a defined route (about 2 connectors per mat). A Platform covers a full area in a grid for laydown yards and work pads (about 1 connector per mat).

For a wheel path, enter the length you need to cover. For a platform, enter length and width. Pick your connector type, and the calculator returns the exact number of mats and connectors for the job. Each mat covers 32 sq ft, and the minimum order is 14 mats.

Quick Sizing Checklist

  • 1. Choose your layout: Wheel Path (8' vehicle track) or Platform (full coverage)
  • 2. Measure the distance: length for a path, length × width for a platform
  • 3. Pick a connector: DuraLink for vehicle traffic, bolt plates for foot traffic
  • 4. Remember each mat covers 32 sq ft (4' × 8')
  • 5. Order at least 14 mats (the minimum)
