A Practical Guide to Western Green Erosion Control
Western Green’s Excel family is a complete rolled-erosion-control line, organized by how long the product needs to perform and how aggressive the site is. At one end are short-term erosion control blankets (ECBs) that hold soil and seed while vegetation establishes, then break down. At the other end are permanent turf reinforcement mats (TRMs) engineered to armor slopes and channels for the life of the project.
The naming follows the materials: straw for the shortest design life, straw/coconut blends for mid-range, pure coconut for longer natural durability, and polypropylene matrix TRMs for permanent, high-flow protection. Netting options (single, double, triple net, plus all-natural biodegradable versions) tune both strength and how the product degrades.
Blankets vs. Turf Reinforcement Mats
The first decision is temporary vs. permanent. It comes down to whether vegetation alone will eventually hold the site, or whether the surface needs reinforcement that stays in place for good.
Erosion Control Blankets (ECBs)
Temporary — straw, coconut & blends
Hold soil and seed in place while vegetation establishes, then biodegrade. Chosen by expected design life and slope severity.
- Seeding & revegetation
- Slopes & disturbed ground
- All-natural (AN) options available
Turf Reinforcement Mats (TRMs)
Permanent — PP5 & poly-matrix
Engineered, non-degrading mats that permanently reinforce vegetation for high-flow channels and steep or demanding slopes.
- Channels & high-flow areas
- Steep or long slopes
- Permanent, long-term design life
The Excel Line by Material & Duty Level
Within the blanket range, the material determines how long the product lasts before it breaks down. Stepping up from straw to coconut adds natural longevity; TRMs step outside the biodegradable range entirely for permanent protection.
| Type | Examples | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Straw, single net | Excel SR-1, SR-1 Rapid Go, SR-1AN | Short-term cover on gentle slopes; fastest to degrade |
| Straw, double net | Excel SS-2, SS-2 Rapid Go, SS-2AN | Short-term cover with added strength on moderate slopes |
| Straw/coconut blend | Excel CS-3, CS-3AN | Mid-range design life; longer than straw alone |
| Coconut | Excel CC-4, CC-4AN | Longer natural durability for tougher slopes & channels |
| TRM — poly matrix | ECP-3, ECC-3, ECSC-3, PP5-10/12 | Permanent reinforcement for channels & steep slopes |
| High-performance TRM | PP5-Pro, PP5-Xtreme | Maximum permanent protection in the most demanding conditions |
Naming notes: “AN” products use all-natural, biodegradable netting; “Rapid Go” netting is designed to degrade faster. Higher net counts (single → double → triple) generally add strength and handling durability.
How to Choose the Right Product
Four factors point you to the right blanket or mat. The on-page Product Finder walks you through them in a few questions.
- Design life — how long protection is needed before vegetation takes over, or whether it must be permanent.
- Slope & flow — steeper slopes and channels with moving water call for stronger blankets or TRMs.
- Permanent vs. temporary — reinforce for the life of the site (TRM) or hold soil while it vegetates (ECB).
- Netting preference — all-natural (AN) netting where biodegradability matters; standard netting for strength.
