RECYCLEX TURF REINFORCEMENT MATS

Recyclex turf reinforcement mats are permanent erosion control mats that are made from 100% recycled post-consumer goods. Recyclex TRMs are typically used on ditch bottoms, channel bottoms, swales, slopes, on shoreline. The top and bottom of each blanket is covered with heavy duty polypropylene netting.

Recyclex® TRMs: A Practical Guide to Long-Term Erosion Control

What it is: Recyclex® TRMs are permanent turf reinforcement mats made from 100% post-consumer recycled fibers—tough, green mats that stabilize soil and nurture vegetation for the long haul.

Ideal use cases: Steep slopes, channels, stormwater swales, down-chutes, shorelines—where a temporary blanket won’t cut it and riprap might be excessive.

How Recyclex® TRMs Work

The interlocking fibers and heavy netting create a 3D matrix that grips soil, slows water at ground level, protects seed, and promotes vegetation anchoring the mat for stability.

  • Permanent erosion control—stays year after year.
  • Two installation styles:
    • Stand-alone: laid directly over the seedbed.
    • Soil-fill: a thin soil veneer atop the mat before seeding.
  • Stays anchored—even in high flows—thanks to fiber density >1.

Selecting the Right Recyclex® Option

Match the mat to slope or flow conditions, then choose an installation method that aligns with your vegetation goals.

  • Use on side slopes or channels where higher shear forces exist.
  • Steeper gradients? Recyclex is ideal.
  • Always specify overlaps (6"), staple rows, and trenching in your plans.

Pro tip: Call out “stand-alone” vs “soil-fill,” anchoring patterns, and overlaps in project specs for consistent installations.

Case Study: Shoreline Channel Reinforcement

Situation: A coastal channel needing stabilization without riprap. Goals were erosion control, natural appearance, and vegetated long-term stabilization.

Solution: Installed Recyclex TRM using the soil-fill method: mat anchored, topped with ~1" soil, seeded, and protected for early germination. Vegetation interlocked with the mat to lock soil in place.

  • Maintained intimate soil contact during flows.
  • Full vegetation within one season; stable, natural shoreline appearance.
  • Contractor success due to proper trenching and staple spacing.

Field Checklist: Installing Recyclex® TRMs Successfully

  1. Prep seedbed (fine grade, compact, remove debris).
  2. Seed, then either:
    • Stand-alone: Place mat over seeded bed.
    • Soil-fill: Anchor mat, add thin soil veneer, seed, then cover.
  3. Install mats in flow direction (channels) or vertical on slopes.
  4. Trench at start, overlap mats 6", and staple overlaps.
  5. Anchor per specification: denser at edges, seams, and transitions.
  6. Water if needed, mow at safe stand height, inspect after storms.

Why Recyclex® TRMs Are a Smart Choice

They deliver long-term erosion control, encourage vegetation, reduce maintenance vs. rock, and support sustainability via recycled materials—making them a greener, practical choice between blankets and hard armor.
