Why Petrotac

A waterproof membrane and crack barrier in one roll

Petrotac combines a tough geotextile with a rubberized-asphalt adhesive backing. It seals cracks and joints against water while absorbing the stresses that cause reflective cracking to telegraph through new asphalt.

Stops Reflective Cracking

Interrupts crack propagation so old cracks don't telegraph through the new overlay.

Waterproof Seal

Rubberized-asphalt backing blocks moisture intrusion at joints, cracks, and bridge decks.

Peel & Stick

Self-adhesive — no tack coat, no heating, no specialized paving equipment required.

Lowers Repair Cost

Reduces bridge waterproofing cost and extends pavement life with a fast spot-repair install.

How It Works

A stress-absorbing membrane between old and new pavement

When a cracked surface moves under traffic and temperature swings, that movement normally transfers straight up into a new overlay — reappearing as the same crack within a season or two. Petrotac places a flexible, waterproof interlayer in between: the membrane absorbs and dissipates that movement while its rubberized-asphalt backing seals out water that would otherwise undermine the base.

Where Petrotac Works

Common applications

Local pavement distress

Spot-treat alligatored or distressed areas before an overlay.

Joints & moderate cracks

Seal and bridge working joints and cracks to stop reflection.

Highways & parking areas

Extend service life on roadways, lots, and laydown areas.

Airport pavements

Performs under demanding load and movement on airfield surfaces.

Bridge decks & waterproofing

Cuts bridge waterproofing cost while protecting the deck from moisture.

Moisture-failure repair

Stops water intrusion that leads to base failure and potholing.

Installation

Four steps, no special equipment

Petrotac installs fast as a peel-and-stick membrane. These are general guidelines — always follow the manufacturer's data sheet and your project specifications.

1

Clean the surface

Sweep and dry the area. The surface must be clean, dry, and free of loose material and standing water for the adhesive to bond.

2

Prime if needed

Apply primer on dusty, porous, or older surfaces per the data sheet to improve adhesion before placement.

3

Peel & place

Remove the release liner and roll the membrane onto the prepared surface, adhesive side down, keeping it flat and wrinkle-free.

4

Roll & pave

Press with a roller for full contact, then pave the hot mix overlay directly over the membrane.

Questions

Petrotac FAQ

What's the difference between Petrotac and Petromat?
Petrotac is a peel-and-stick membrane best for spot repairs — joints, cracks, and localized distress — with a waterproof rubberized-asphalt backing. Petromat is a nonwoven paving fabric installed with a tack coat for full-width overlays across large areas. Browse Petromat paving fabric →
Which roll width should I order?
Use narrower widths (12"–24") for joint and crack repair, and wider rolls (36"–48") for full-width distress, large patches, and bridge decks. All widths are the same Petrotac 4591 membrane, so choose based on coverage.
Do I need a tack coat or special equipment?
No. Petrotac is self-adhesive — no tack coat or specialized paving equipment is required. A primer may be recommended on dusty, porous, or older surfaces to improve adhesion. Check the product data sheet for specifics.
Can it be paved over directly?
Yes. Once the membrane is rolled flat for full contact, the hot mix asphalt overlay is placed directly over it using standard paving practice.
How does shipping work?
All items ship free via standard ground and typically ship within 1–2 business days when ordered before 12:00 noon EST.

The Problem

A heavily traveled interstate worn down by water damage

Interstate 70, running east–west, is one of the most traveled interstate highways in the United States. A major increase in population across the eastern metro Indianapolis area had taken its toll on the stretch running through Greenfield, IN.

The existing composite pavement had an underlying Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) base with five inches of asphalt concrete on top. That asphalt had seriously deteriorated — surface-water infiltration weakened the foundation layers and led to erosion and freeze-thaw damage. To renovate the roadway, all asphalt was milled down to the old PCC surface so it could be replaced.

The Solution

PETROTAC® strips to obstruct reflective cracking

To ensure the renovation offered long-term benefits, INDOT needed a solution to diminish cracking from the PCC pavement that could reflect up into the new overlay. Badly damaged PCC joints were patched, and the moderately stable joints were covered with strips of PETROTAC® — a self-adhering paving-membrane interlayer designed to obstruct reflective cracking through stress absorption — to increase the life of the replaced overlay.

Running along a 7.5-mile stretch, the existing joints and other cracks were filled, a primer was applied directly to the milled surface, and PETROTAC® strips were applied over targeted joints and cracks on the PCC pavement.

Performance

A full moisture barrier and stress-absorption interlayer

A number of less-active and spalled joints, along with cracks, remained in place. PETROTAC® Enviro was included in the design to provide a full pavement moisture barrier and stress-absorption interlayer. INDOT had used PETROTAC® Enviro once before on a section of Interstate 65 and was pleased with its ability to extend pavement life — and liked that the paving fabric could be milled and recycled.

A 0.26 gallon/square-yard application of PG64-22 was sprayed onto the milled pavement and over the PETROTAC® strips. Enviro was then applied and the intermediate HMA course placed. Enviro is well suited to milled surfaces because its elongation conforms to the rough texture. Finally, the wearing surface course of asphalt cement was placed to complete the renovation.

Using PETROTAC® over the worst joints and cracks, followed by a full-width installation of PETROTAC® Enviro, gave the pavement what it needed to extend the life of the replacement overlay — letting the foundation layers regain strength, stopping erosion, and guarding against freeze-thaw damage.
