- More interior workspace: Utility workers servicing the meter have more room to maneuver with a rectangular box than a round one of similar interior volume.
- Wide utility specification acceptance: The 13" × 20" and 14" × 19" rectangular sizes are specified by a very large number of U.S. water utilities, making replacement and standardization straightforward.

- Utility standardization: Some utility districts use round utility boxes for all below-grade access points (water, gas, electric) for consistency. If your utility specifies round, it is not optional.
