What Are Ground Protection Mats?
Ground protection mats are rigid panels made from engineered plastic (typically high-density polyethylene, or HDPE) that are placed on the ground to create a stable, protective surface layer. They come in various sizes and duty ratings, but the core function is always the same: spread load, protect the ground beneath.
The term “ground protection mat” covers a wide range of products. At the low end, you have thin rubber mats used for pedestrian areas. At the professional end — the kind we carry — you have rigid HDPE composite panels capable of supporting tens of thousands of pounds, designed for repeated professional use across years of deployments.
When Do You Need Ground Protection Mats?
Any time a surface you care about will be subjected to loads it can’t handle on its own, you need ground protection. Common triggers:
- Construction near homes: Excavators, concrete trucks, and delivery vehicles tear up lawns and driveways. Mats protect the turf and hardscape.
- Landscaping projects: Skid steers, bobcats, and heavy equipment used for grading, drainage, or large planting jobs cause compaction and rutting even on dry ground.
- Events and concerts: Stadium turf, venue lawns, and grassy parking areas suffer when foot traffic and production vehicles operate on them without protection.
- Construction site access: Building a temporary road over soft ground, mud, or grass for ongoing vehicle traffic requires a surface that won’t fail after the first few passes.

Rule of thumb: If the surface is soft, wet, or finished (grass, turf, landscaping), and it will see anything heavier than a person walking, you should consider ground protection mats.
How They Work: Load Distribution
The physics are simple. A vehicle tire or equipment track exerts enormous pressure on a small contact area — sometimes hundreds of pounds per square inch. That concentrated pressure exceeds the bearing capacity of soft soil or turf, causing it to fail (sink, rut, or compress).
A ground protection mat acts as a rigid bridge. The panel doesn’t flex significantly under load, so it distributes the weight from the point of contact across the entire panel area. Instead of one tire exerting 300 psi over a 10-square-inch contact patch, the mat spreads that force across its 32 (DuraDeck) or 105 (MegaDeck) square feet. The ground beneath each square inch of mat now sees a tiny fraction of the original pressure.
This is why mat size and rigidity matter. A larger, stiffer mat distributes load over a greater area and provides better ground protection.
Types of Ground Protection Mats
Light Duty — DuraDeck (4’×8’)
Light duty mats handle residential and lighter commercial loads. DuraDeck weighs 86 lbs per panel — 1–2 people can carry and place it without equipment. Rated to support up to 80 tons, UV-resistant, US-made. Minimum order: 14 mats.
Medium Duty — SignaRoad (6.8’×10’)
Medium duty for repeat vehicle traffic, temporary roads, and mixed-use access. The pin connection system (10 pins per mat) keeps panels locked together under wheel loads. Each panel covers 68 square feet, making road installation efficient.
Heavy Duty — MegaDeck HD+ (7.5’×14’)
Heavy duty for extreme loads on soft or wet ground. Rated to 600 psi with steel connectors. At 105 square feet per panel and ~1,025 lbs, these require equipment for placement. Minimum order: 5 mats.

Installation Tips
- Map the area first. Walk the site and identify the path vehicles will actually take. Mark the lane width you need (minimum 12 ft for a single vehicle lane, 16 ft for trucks).
- Start at the entry point. Lay the first mat at the point where vehicles enter, then build forward in the direction of travel.
- Keep panels tight. Gaps between panels create weak points where tires can drop or panels can shift. Use the connection hardware appropriate for your mat system.
- Inspect after first few passes. After the first few vehicle crossings, check for shifting or soft spots. Add mats and/or increase duty level where needed.
- Plan removal. Stack mats on pallets as you pull them — don’t just pile them. Proper stacking protects panels and keeps them ready for the next project.
