Enkamat Before and After Hillside Erosion Control

Enkamat 7010 TRM Case Study

How EnkaMat 7010 Was Used For Roads In Disrepair In Hungary

The nearside lanes between Székesfehérvár and Veszprém were in really bad condition. There were several settlements and cracks which made transportation between the two cities very difficult. To solve the problem, retaining walls and steep slopes using EnkaMat erosion control were put in place.

The Challenge

It became necessary to renew the roads between Várpalota and Hajmáskér (-6 km) because of the bad conditions of the nearside lanes. In order to create the required road width and drainage system, retaining walls and steep slopes were required because of the limit of free space alongside the lanes. For steep slopes, the contractor used Geobrugg’s TECCO high-tensile wire system to stabilize the slopes.

The Solution

In order to install one layer of EnkaMat 7010 under the TECCO wire mesh, you need:
• Erosion protection against rainwater and wind.
• Retention of the fragmented rock surface.
• Grip layer for the topsoil and roots of vegetation in case of a hydroseeding process.

EnkaMat 3D erosion control mat along with the TECCO wire system offers ideal protection against slope sliding and soil erosion.

The Benefits From The Perfect Solution

In order to find the perfect solution, the contractor needed to find a material that could protect the steep slope against wind and rainwater erosion. It would have to retain the fragmented rock particles under the steel wire and be a stabilization grip layer for the fertile soil to prevent the fill from washing out. They found that EnkaMat was the perfect solution to achieve these requirements.

EnkaMat 7010 is a strong three-dimensional 10 mm thick mat with an open structure made with 90% voids. This creates an artificial root structure by its high filament density which ensures a permanent and green solution. The high filament density is up to 1810 filament/m2.

Because of the high-quality polyamide raw material, EnkaMat 7010 has high UV resistance which was required in this application. EnkaMat and its UV-resistance have been tested by several independent organizations.

The Installation Benefits

EnkaMat is a light, flexible solution that adapts easily to soil contours and fits perfectly under the steel wire.

The End Results

Multifunctional EnkaMat 7010 saves on costs and is literally maintenance-free. It is the best solution that has been considered dependable for quite some time now.

Permanent Erosion Control Blanket (Turf Reinforcement Mat)

A permanent erosion control blanket protects soil on slopes, channels, and shorelines for the long term. Unlike biodegradable blankets that break down within a season or two, a permanent turf reinforcement mat (TRM) stays in place indefinitely, reinforcing vegetation roots and holding soil against high-flow and high-velocity conditions for the life of the site.

The three-dimensional matrix locks soil and seed in place while grass establishes, then becomes a permanent part of the root zone — delivering erosion protection that natural vegetation alone can't provide.

Where to Use a Permanent Erosion Control Blanket

  • Steep slopes — long-term protection where gradients exceed what vegetation can hold alone
  • Drainage channels and swales — high-flow areas that need reinforced cover
  • Shorelines and spillways — wave action and concentrated flow
  • Roadway embankments — permanent stabilization along cuts and fills

Permanent vs. Biodegradable Blankets

Choose a permanent turf reinforcement mat for steep grades, channels, and any location where flows exceed the limits of unreinforced vegetation. Choose a biodegradable blanket — often made from straw or coconut fiber — for milder slopes where established grass will eventually provide all the protection needed on its own.

Installation Basics

  1. Grade and smooth the slope, then seed the prepared soil.
  2. Anchor the top of the blanket in a trench and roll it down the slope in the direction of water flow.
  3. Overlap adjacent rolls and secure with staples at the spacing recommended for the slope angle.
  4. Increase staple density as the slope angle, measured in degrees, increases.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does a permanent erosion control blanket last?

A permanent TRM is engineered to remain functional for the design life of the site. It does not break down like a temporary blanket; instead it integrates with the vegetation's root system for ongoing reinforcement.

What slope angle requires a turf reinforcement mat?

Steeper slopes and concentrated-flow channels are where permanent mats earn their place. As the slope angle in degrees increases, unreinforced vegetation reaches its limit and a reinforced mat is needed to hold soil in place.

Can grass grow through the blanket?

Yes. The open matrix is designed for seed to germinate through it. The vegetation grows up and roots down into the mat, which is what creates the permanent reinforced layer.
