Protect Your Landscaping When Renovating Your Home's Exterior

If you have decided it's time to renovate the exterior of your home, you probably realize it will leave your yard in a total mess if you do not take steps to protect it.

Most construction involves heavy equipment and construction gear that will take a toll on your landscaping, impacting its health and overall appearance. On top of that, you could end up with broken limbs from trees, damaged root systems, torn-up grass, and compacted soil.

Before starting your renovation project, you need to think about your landscaping and how to protect it. Here are some very helpful tips you should follow:

First off, you should hire a landscaping company to analyze your yard and create a plan for protecting your landscape.

Take Note

If painting your home is in the plan for renovating, observe a specific spot like your front door and sweep up any dead leaves on the ground, pluck off any yellow or dead leaves, and trim the branches on your trees that are blocking your yard. This will add an extra layer of safety for painters that will be working. Also, be sure to bring your garden furniture inside or placed in a storage facility on the property until the renovation is done.

If you have never heard of equipment mats, you're not alone. You should use these protection mats as well as plywood boards to decrease any damage caused by heavy equipment or other activities that can harm your property. Even construction boots can leave a trail of destruction. Added weight along with the equipment can be curtailed to prevent damage to the soil and tearing up your grass. When the work is done, remove the mats and plywood immediately.

Get With Your Contractor

When construction is taking place outside your home such as workers building a new deck while other workers are painting your home, your landscape can turn into a total mess in as little as one day. In order to prevent any issues, it's important you get with your contractor ahead of time. They have the experience and knowledge to know how to protect your landscaping during the renovation process. Experienced painters do not need to be reminded that they must protect your plants as that's a part of their job but there is no harm bringing the subject up with your contractor. Your contractor can fill you in on how they plan to carry out the project and how the landscape can be impacted during the process. They should be able to provide tips to help you keep your landscaping safe. Your contractor can use techniques, and equipment that would be less damaging to your yard and ask the workers to be careful while at work.

A Quick Note

In many cases, the company you hire for renovations should have information about what they will do to help protect your property. Most of these companies will clean up after themselves each day but you should know this ahead of time.

Have Debris Removed Properly

It's inevitable you will have falling debris covering your yard and landscaping so cover everything in a tarp or a canopy, especially in areas that are vulnerable to falling construction materials. If you can, pick up and get rid of materials like grass, plastic, concrete, tiles, and even heavy objects that will easily damage your landscape if left behind for any length of time. You can protect your plants and grass from damage during the renovations.

Move Plants Out Of The Way

You might want to dig up and remove plants to a safer place if they are close to the construction and will be affected. You might be able to move smaller trees but large trees will have to be analyzed by tree removal experts, not you. You might need to contact a professional tree removal company if you have any trees that are diseased or have problems with insects. If the trees can be saved, the tree removal service should be able to help you out once the renovations are done. If you are not comfortable moving your plants, hire a landscaper to help you out.

Create A Pathway

To help protect your plants and their roots from heavy machinery, create a pathway. Put up fences with signs to protect them and consider cutting down low-hanging branches from trees that could possibly break off when large vehicles pass through.

Adding Mulch

Before construction ever begins, place a thick layer of mulch around your trees and plants to protect them from damage. Mulch will form a protective layer for the roots and can reduce the impact caused by heavy equipment.

In Conclusion

First and foremost, when reaching out to hire a company for renovations and/or painting services, find out if they clean up after themselves and will cart away any debris they have caused. Most of these companies will clean up after themselves. All said it's inevitable that something will be harmed even as much as the contractor has bent over backward to protect your landscape.

In the meantime, if you are planning on exterior work on your home, follow some of these ideas to preserve your landscape. It's inevitable that some trees, shrubs, and plants will be harmed even with the best intentions from your contractor. In most cases, if a homeowner has damaged plants, they should contact a landscaper to help them get through the damage.

A landscaper should be able to weigh the damage and get your yard back to its original condition.
